California Governor Signs Same-Sex Benefits Bill

September 8, 2011

Under a new law signed by California Gov. Jerry Brown yesterday, private businesses that want to do contract work for the state need not apply if they don’t offer health benefits to their employees’ same-sex partners.

SB 117, sponsored by state Sen. Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego, offers no exemptions for religious organizations. It passed the state Senate on Aug. 22 and the General Assembly on July 14.

CitizenLink Social Policy Analyst Jeff Johnston said laws like these simply don’t serve businesses — or the state — well.

“California has serious economic issues — but instead of dealing with those issues, their legislators continue to push a gay activist agenda,” he said. “This newest legislation will require any business owned by a Christian who does business with state to provide benefits to an employee’s same-sex partner, even if doing so violates his deeply held religious beliefs. The regulations for businesses just keep piling up, while the state flounders economically.”
